Increase in younger people in Leeds contracting Covid-19 with focus still on one Leeds postcode

Leeds council has confirmed coronavirus cases among young people in the city are on the rise as the virus outbreak management update reveals locations of new cases.

Cllr Paul Wray revealed on his website that Covid-19 cases were identified across Leeds including in three nurseries, two workplaces, with four others affected and at one secondary school following the A-level results collection day.

In the update, the names of the affected places were not disclosed.

However, it does state there are currently no outbreaks in care homes and cases are improving in Kirkstall where a cluster of cases was identified earlier this month.

It said: “Since last week:

“An outbreak has been identified at a nursery involving four positive cases. Two bubbles have been disbanded and infection control measures are in place.

“Two other nurseries continue to receive support following one positive case in each, as reported last week.

“Three separate positive cases were reported following A-Level results collection at one secondary school.

“Environmental Health continues to support two workplace outbreaks and four other affected workplaces."

The update goes onto add that the situation in Harehills and Kirkstall is now "stable" after clusters of the virus were identified in both areas.

But it highlights that there has been an increase in cases in the LS8 area.

It said: “A considerable amount of work continues in Kirkstall and Harehills and the surrounding area in response to the clusters of cases.

"Incident management arrangements are in place and the most recent meeting confirms that the situation is stable in both areas, and improving in Kirkstall.

"There has been some increase in cases in the broader LS8 area, which may be a reflection of increased testing. The level of activity taking place reflects what would be required if Leeds was on the watch list, with testing at approximately 1,000 per day.

"The pop-up test site at Bilal Centre in LS8 was attended by 98 people last week."

Leeds City Council has said they are continuing to monitor cases across the city but they are seeing an increase of cases in younger people reflecting the national picture.

They said: “We are continuing to closely monitor small clusters of cases across the city, taking targeted preventative steps in Kirkstall, Harehills and the surrounding areas. We are also seeing an increase of cases in younger people across the city, reflecting the national picture in the 15-39 age group.

"The following local work is taking place:

  • Encouraging employers to follow national guidance on working safely.

  • Providing specific support for care homes, schools and other places with groups of people.

  • Engaging with communities, businesses and partners.

  • Social media messaging to discourage gatherings.

“We would encourage everyone to play their part in helping us to prevent further cases and stay on top of community transmission by following national guidance:

  • Keep a safe distance from others.

  • Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds.

  • Wear a face covering on public transport and in indoor areas such as shops, places of worship, hairdressers, libraries and healthcare settings.

  • Do not leave home if you, or anyone in your household, has symptoms.

  • If you have symptoms book a free test at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test.

  • If you need to stay at home and have no family or friends for support, ring 0113 378 1877.
