Increase in the number of people in Nottinghamshire on Universal Credit

More than 42,000 people across Nottinghamshire are now on Universal Credit, according to latest Government statistics.

The controversial benefit system is intended to replace six "legacy" benefits including tax credits and unemployment benefit into one monthly payment.

It started being rolled out across Nottinghamshire last year and there are now a total of 42,572 people on it. This is a substantial increase on September, when the figure stood at 35,862.

The benefit was supposed to be implemented across the UK by 2017, but difficulties with its roll out, which has included claimants missing payments, means the full roll-out is behind schedule.

Will Quince, government minister for welfare delivery, said: "Significant improvements have been made in the past year, such as providing extra support for families reporting childcare costs reducing deductions, and we will continue to work towards improving the service."

Here is the breakdown of the number of claimants in each area across Nottinghamshire:

Ashfield East Midlands 4,664
Bassetlaw East Midlands 5,228
Broxtowe East Midlands 2,951
Gedling East Midlands 3,118
Mansfield East Midlands 4,663
Newark and Sherwood East Midlands 3,855
Nottingham East Midlands 16,228
Rushcliffe East Midlands 1,865
