Increase in penalty charges for people not clearing up dog waste or littering in Gedling borough

The penalty cost for not clearing up your dog's mess and littering has increased across Gedling borough.

Dog owners will now face a £65 fine if caught not picking up their dog's waste - up from £50. The same charges apply for people who are caught littering.

The move is in line with a change in legislation, according to Gedling Borough Council, who have welcomed the decision if it acts as a deterrent.

Over the last year, the council has handed out 60 fines to people who have not cleared up after their pooch or been caught littering.

In January, Nottinghamshire Live reported how piles of dog waste had been dumped at the entrance to Gedling Country park, despite bins just 100 yards away.

Councillor David Ellis, portfolio holder for public protection at Gedling Borough Council, said: “Due to a recent change in the law, we have had to increase the fines. If this increase acts as a deterrent in any way then we welcome it.

"In the last year, we have issued over 60 fines to people who have chosen not to clean up after their dogs or to drop litter so our advice is don’t do it and you won’t face a fine, whatever the amount might be.”
