Increase in Covid-19 cases near the Scottish border as Leicester put back under lockdown

The English regions bordering Scotland, the North East and the North West, have the highest levels of Covid-19 in the UK, new figures show.

Government data shows that the North East has a total of 10,555 cases with an infection rate of 397.1. Meanwhile, the North West has a whopping 27,272 cases with a rate of 374.0.

This is compared to Scotland which has a total of 15,818 cases and a rate of 290.9.

The news comes as Leicester in the East Midlands goes back into lockdown due to following a spike in new cases.

In Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed "a sustained, significant and ongoing reduction" in deaths and cases in Scotland, while warning Scots to stay vigilant.

She added that on the 100th day of lockdown:"To be in our current position, with hospital admissions averaging just four a day, with consistently low numbers of new cases, and with such a sharp reduction in death rates, all of that is massive and very welcome progress."

According to latest figures, coronavirus is still on the increase in 36 counties, cities and boroughs around England.

Leicester is not the only area experiencing an increase in cases. New confirmed cases have been rising across 36 of the 151 upper-tier local authorities in England, reports the Mirror.

Cases are going up again in Sunderland and Gateshead just 50 miles from the border and in Redcar and Cleveland just 70 miles away.

The news comes the day after Nicola Sturgeon warned she will consider introducing quarantine for English visitors to Scotland if the number of coronavirus cases south of the Border surges.

The First Minister said she had no plans at present for restrictions on cross-Border travel but "I'm not ruling anything out".
