Incinerator that burns medical waste, some hazardous, may be built in Kilmarnock

An incinerator for burning medical waste could be built in Kilmarnock if an application gets the green light from East Ayrshire Council.

Waste Energy Partners want to launch the service in the Moorfield Industrial Park, near Braehead Foods.

The waste plant would operate 24 hours a day with seven staff working each shift.

The firm aims to handle up to two tonnes of clinical waste every hour, generating power from the process.

Hazardous waste would be among the material processed.

The developer said there is a demand for a waste disposal service from Crosshouse Hospital and the towns of Kilmarnock, Irvine and Ayr.

A document lodged with the council said: “The facility will operate 24 hours per day.

“This is necessary to enable constant supply of power into the electricity distribution network.”

Materials would be delivered in specialist containers and residual ash would be transported away after processing.

The firm has submitted a report to the council, asking for advice on the environmental assessment that must be carried out to support a planning application.

More information has been requested by the council to ensure the plant would not have an impact on Braehead Foods. The national wholesaler supplies a wide range of food.

The council’s environmental health team asked for Waste Energy Partners to examine whether there would be any smell from the plant.

A council report said: “We are of the opinion that the issue of potential odour should be specifically addressed within any subsequent application, including in the form of an odour impact assessment.”

It also stated that “additional consideration should be given to any impact on the food business neighbouring the proposed development, namely Braehead Foods Ltd.”
