As the temperature climbs, many of us find reasons to spend as much time as possible outdoors. Beaches, barbecues, and golf courses are popular destinations for the summertime crowd.
There’s nothing like that first sip of an ice cold beverage on a hot day. Everyone’s got a favorite—a cold beer, a margarita, or the tried and true glass of water.
A beverage cart driver at a golf course recently shared the recipe for a drink that might be your new favorite. It’s called the water hazard. Apparently water hazards are popular with some of our Canadian neighbors.
TikTok creator Jennifer Friday says that one of her customers recently order a water hazard from her. Although she drives a beverage cart on a golf course, Friday had never heard of the drink. She says her customer told her that it’s a popular golf course drink in Canada.
Then he gave her the recipe, and she made it on camera.
“I’m not sure if this is how you make it,” she says. “But this is how he told me you make it.”
Friday didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
How do you make a water hazard?
Per Friday, a water hazard has a shot of vodka, a splash of lemonade, a splash of Sprite (any lemon-lime soda is fine), and the rest is blue Gatorade.
“This actually sounds really good,” she says of the blue concoction.
When she finishes making it, Friday gives it a shake and says, “So that is a water hazard. New to me. Maybe not new to you.”
There are some variations in recipes for water hazards online, but the basic ingredients are pretty consistent. Some recipes call for two shots of vodka.
A post on Reddit calls for two shots of vodka, then a mix of half Sprite and half blue Gatorade.
A similar concoction is called toilet water, though this isn’t nearly as appetizing or apropos for the golf course.
Is it actually popular?
Lots comments on Friday’s post are from people saying they’ve never heard of a water hazard.
A few Canadians joked that the country’s other 40 million residents are unaware of the drink. (The population of Canada is 40 million.)
“I can confirm as a Canadian this is real. It’s just a golf course drink,” explained a user named Brett. “People don’t go to bars for these as they don’t have Gatorade lol.”
Some suggested that people may not have heard of it outside one specific area. They say the water hazard golf course drink is specific to Winnipeg, Canada.
“I’m from Winnipeg and deff heard of this. We drink these on the courses that offer it!” one woman said.
Another who says she’s in Winnipeg shared that golfer boyfriend “is very proud of his little water hazards.”

Most generally agreed that they wouldn’t mind trying a water hazard next time they hit the links—the drink version, that is.
“Never heard of it but looks good,” said one.
