'In the modern game, that is a penalty' - pundit verdict on key Newcastle incident

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards believes Newcastle were denied a penalty in last night's 5-2 defeat to Leeds.

While the home side eventually romped to a comfortable win, the visitors felt they should have had a spot-kick when the game was level at 1-1 in the second half.

Liam Cooper's challenge on Callum Wilson was deemed not to have been a foul, with VAR agreeing with match referee Simon Hooper.

It was a key incident at a crucial time for the Magpies, with manager Steve Bruce aggrieved that the decision went against them.

"I was all for VAR when they brought it in," he said after the game. "I think if anybody looks at the challenge they'll understand it's a clear penalty.

"We may not have gone on to win the match but certainly when you go in front the outcome can be different."

Analysing the game for Match of the Day, Richards felt some sympathy for the Magpies over the call.

“In the modern game, that is a penalty. I have to agree with him (Bruce) on that, but from certain angles, he looks like he gets the ball.

"I’m a defender, so I’ll always say yes (to going in from behind), but it does look a foul.”

Fellow pundit Danny Murphy was less enthusiastic about the claim, adding: “In real time, it didn’t look like a penalty to me. Once he’s not given it, is it clear and obvious?”
