In pictures: World Book Day celebrated by Merseyside youngsters

Young bookworms across Merseyside are marking a global celebration of reading today.

Primary school pupils - and teachers - are dressing up as their fictional favourites for World Book Day.

World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide day devoted to books and reading, and is marked in more than 100 countries.

As part of the initiative, children are given a £1 book token to spend on a special World Book Day book of their choice.
