In pictures: Thousands flock to Dun Laoghaire for annual Ironman 70.3

Thousands flocked to Dun Laoghaire today for the annual Ironman 70.3, where athletes have to complete a lung-bussting 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile cycle and a 13.1 mile run.

People lined the streets of the south Dublin seaside town to cheer on the brave athletes on their gruelling challenge, which saw competitors move from the sea to the Wicklow mountains.

This was Ireland's biggest triathlon event of the year, and involved a swim from Sandycove around Scotsman's Bay, a cycle route around the Wicklow mountains via Roundwood, followed by a run that took in Monkstown and Seapoint before finishing back at Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

Some participants reported that the swim had to end early due to choppy seas, and the cycling was particularly challenging due to heavy fog that one rider sayng "you couldn't see five metres in front of you".

The 70.3 Ironman events are so-called because they're exactly half the length of a full Ironman triathalon - 140.6 miles or 226.3km.
