This is the 20th year that Tate has commissioned an artist to decorate its Christmas treePhotograph: Sarah Lee/FreelancePrevious artists to take on the project include Sarah Lucas (2006), Richard Wentworth (2004), Tracey Emin (2002), Yinka Shonibare (2001) and Cornelia Parker (1995). 2003's artist, Mark Wallinger, is shortlisted for the 2007 Turner prize, which will be awarded in a few days' timePhotograph: Sarah Lee/FreelanceEntitled Peace on Earth, Fiona Banner's contribution features no fewer than 123 different models of warplane currently in service around the globePhotograph: Sarah Lee/Freelance
Intriguingly, many models - Hawk, Eagle, Falcon - are named after birds, adding to Banner's suggestion that they are perched in the tree ready for take-offPhotograph: Sarah Lee/FreelanceFor Banner, however, the project turned into something of a headache. "It was a major research job to establish exactly what planes are in military service worldwide," she told reporters. "It took a long time to collect the models from all over the world. Some models didn’t exist and I had to construct them from scratch."Photograph: Sarah Lee/FreelanceBut the work hasn't gone to waste - in addition to decorating Tate's tree, Banner has published a book on the subject under her own imprint.
