In pictures: Take a look back at the Edinburgh Marathon through the years

The first Edinburgh Marathon was ran in 2003 and attracted just 3,000 participants - last year over 35,000 runners took part.

To date, the Edinburgh Marathon Festival has raised over £30 million for hundreds of charities and thousands more runners are gearing up to tread the route in the name of a good cause next month.

Starting on Potterrow in the grounds of one of the oldest universities in the world, runners pass through the city to the sound of cheering spectators and out to East Lothian, before crossing the finish line.

As the challenge of a lifetime approaches and months of training comes to an end, this is the perfect time to look back over the years at inspirational runners. Maybe you can even spot yourself?

For six top tips from a Edinburgh Marathon finisher look no further, see here.
