In pictures: Russia invades Ukraine - explosions and tanks on the streets

Pictures from Ukraine show the devastation and human tragedy that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused.

Moscow has hit its neighbour with a wide-ranging attack, targeting cities and bases with air strikes or shelling.

While tanks and troops have poured into the country at points along its eastern, southern and northern borders, Ukraine has said.

In Kharkiv, a woman who managed to survive a Russian airstrike on her apartment complex stares straight into the camera.

A huge explosion rocked a munitions factory just moments after Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Mariupol Mayor Vadym Bouchenko said three people have been killed and six others, including a child, injured by Russian shelling in a suburb of the city.

Russians also attacked the airport and a village nearby, he added.

In Kiev, girls clutch their mobile phones looking for the latest information on the shelling as they take shelter in the capital’s subway system.

Air raid alarm systems rung out as loud explosions rocked the capital awake on Thursday morning.

On Snapchat, people were seen desperately trying to buy medical supplies and food at supermarkets. Others queued up outside banks looking to empty their accounts before fleeing.

Some Ukrainians drove across fields to flee Kharkiv after traffic jams blocked the motorways out of the city.
