In pictures: Standing in the face of the fires

It's scary stuff. Flames rising above the tree tops reaching into orange, apocalyptic skies. The jet engine roar of the fire in the distance.

Some people have been forced to flee their homes. Others wait, on edge, wondering if it will be their turn soon.

The fires east of Canberra are burning about 100,000 hectares between them, requiring a mammoth effort from fire crews and the communities supporting them.

The Canberra Times has had photographers on the ground at both the Currowan fire on the South Coast and the North Black Range fire near Braidwood.

Between them, photographers Sitthixay Ditthavong, Dion Georgopoulos, Elesa Kurtz and Jamila Toderas have captured the devastation on the ground, the bravery of firefighters and residents, and the intensity of the fires over the last week.
