In pictures: Hundreds run off the post-Christmas slump by plunging into the North Sea in Newbiggin

More than 200 hardy souls ran off the post-Christmas slump by plunging into the North Sea for the annual Newbiggin Boxing Day Dip.

Crowds of over 1,000 gathered on the Northumberland beach to witness the tradition started in the 1980s by the Ashington Lions.

The throng of dedicated Boxing Day dippers, in an array of brightly coloured costumes and attires huddled on a chilly beach then sprinted into the freezing sea at 11am, watched by spectators on the beach and promenade.

The event was organised by Newbiggin RNLI lifeboat station and has raised over £1,330 in donations for the RNLI.

The Newbiggin Ladies Fundraising Team volunteers also had a busy morning providing refreshments that were served during the morning from the lifeboat station.

Newbiggin's lifeboat volunteers along with the local Coastguard teams from Newbiggin and Blyth marshalled and controlled the event on the beach with the lifeboat at sea providing seaward safety cover.

Lifeboats from Newbiggin and their flank station at Blyth also took part to provide the essential event seaward safety cover.

A multitude of other charities were represented at the event.
