In pictures: Edinburgh's roads transformed into peaceful pedestrian walkways in Open Streets day

Edinburgh city centre was eerily quiet today (5 May), as many roads in the historic Old Town were closed to traffic as part of a new 'Open Streets' scheme.

The closures are planned for the first Sunday of every month to allow the city centre to be "more people-focussed" - meaning people can stroll around without worrying about cars, and enjoy various activities. Some people even set up tennis courts in the road!

It's certainly odd to see some of the city centre's streets and buildings without throngs of parked cars and traffic in the way.

The Royal Mile also saw free guided walks, volunteers handed out hula hoops to kids, there was even tai chi and special picnic spaces. There was jazz in Dunbar Close Garden, too.

Check out our gallery above for some great pictures of this innovative scheme. Will you be taking part next month?
