In pictures: Ayrshire closes in on normality as punters enjoy pubs and haircuts

A haircut and a trip down the local boozer.

Two things we took for granted before coronavirus brought the country and the wider world to a standstill almost four months ago.

Today, Wednesday, July 15, marked the day that pubs and hairdressers could finally open their doors and welcome customers back indoors.

Needless to say, there was no shortage of folks looking for that first proper 'trim' or cold pint in familiar surroundings since lockdown.

We sent snapper Steve McKendrick into Irvine town centre to gauge the mood as Scotland took another step forward in the fight against the disease.

He popped into The Turf, a popular watering hole in Eglinton Street, where staff were delighted to see familiar faces again.

But punters were quickly - and gently -  reminded that they'll have to adjust to a 'new normal' with strict hygiene and social distancing rules in place.

Barmaid Margaret-Anne said: "I've told them, if  I don't hear the hand dryer blasting as they come out the toilet, they'll be sent back in to wash their hands.

"There will be no messing about!"

Stevie also paid a visit to a busy Porthead Tavern and Hamilton's Restaurant in High Street where customers can once again enjoy a meal and/or retire to the bar if they wish too.

Town centre hair salons, Marion Bennett, Pam & Co and Harrison Hair and Beauty had their hands full too with pre-booked appointments.

Staff were suitably kitted out in face masks and visors as they tackled socially distanced clusters of clients who were delighted with their new dos.

See next week's Irvine Herald, out Wednesday, July 22,  for more pictures.
