In June, Tamil Nadu added 3 lakh cellphone connections: Trai

CHENNAI: After losing 5.7 lakh mobile phone subscriptions in May, when new Covid-19 cases in the state were at the peak during the second wave , Tamil Nadu added about three lakh new wireless connections in June. Telecom experts attribute the spike to the reverse migration post second wave.

Data released by Trai states that most telecom operators recorded new mobile phone subscribers in June under the wireless category. This pushed the total number of mobile phone subscriptions to 8.25 crore across Tamil Nadu, which includes the Chennai circle.

At the same time, the total number of wireline connections comprising landline, FTTH and fibernet has touched 21 lakh in June. While only 22,530 new wireline connections were added in the state in June, it jumped by nearly 1.9 lakh new subscriptions from April to May this year.

V K Sanjeevi, chief general manager of BSNL Chennai Telephones, said there was an increase in the number of mobile phone users moving from the rural areas to urban pockets after the second wave in June. “It is due to reverse migration because there is a spike in the number of new mobile phone subscriptions.”
