In For a Penny: Everything you need to know about ITV's new game show

It started life as a segment on Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, but In For a Penny is now set to launch as a fully-fledged spin-off show.

Hosted by Stephen Mulhern, the new ITV series sees the presenter travel up and down the country to challenge the public to turn their pennies into pounds.

With its parent show on hiatus until 2020, In For a Penny could prove just the thing to fill the Takeaway-shaped hole in your weekend viewing schedule.

Here’s everything you need to know before it makes its debut.

What happens in In For a Penny?

Spin-off: Stephen Mulhern will front the lively game show (ITV Studios)

Mulhern will be popping up around the country to persuade unsuspecting members of the public to take part in a series of fun challenges. If they’re successful, they could win a cash prize.

In Pump It Up, Mulhern will offer to pay for drivers’ petrol – if they can pump the exact amount they’ve selected in just two pumps. If they go over or under that amount, they’ll have to foot the bill themselves.

In Mum’s The Word, participants call their mums to describe a word in 30 seconds – without using any of the pre-determined key words.

The classic In For a Penny format (as seen on Saturday Night Takeaway) challenges contestants to five rounds of games. If they’re successful in each round, they’ll take home £1,000.

“I have absolutely loved filming this show,” Mulhern said. “I don’t think I have ever laughed so much filming a series and it was all down to the Great British public, they are the real stars.

“I’ve been privileged to meet some of the most amazing people up and down the country and now the viewers will get to see just how funny and entertaining they are.”

The series also has Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s seal of approval, with the presenting partners voicing their “delight” at the spin-off show.

“Stephen is the perfect host, his warmth, wit and all-round humour mixed with the great British public, who are not only brilliant but are also unfazed when a man in a sparkly jacket appears and asks them to take part in ridiculous games!” they said.

When is In For a Penny on TV?

The show is set to begin on April 13 at 7.30pm on ITV, with subsequent episodes set to air at the same time each week.

It’ll also be available to stream on demand on ITV player.
