In Darien Wal-Mart shooting, $3 million bail set for Downers Grove man

Dec. 07--Bail was set at $3 million Monday morning for a Downers Grove man accused of shooting another man inside a Wal-Mart store in Darien last week.

DuPage prosecutors asked for and received a $3 million bail for Bradley I. Morris, who according to police turns 20 on Tuesday. Morris appeared in DuPage County bond court, where Judge Richard Russo agreed with the bail amount requested by prosecutors.

Morris is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Local authorities and U.S. marshals took Morris into custody Saturday, prosecutors said, as he was attempting to leave Chicago for Florida on a bus.

He is charged with shooting the victim in the shoulder area inside the Wal-Mart, one of four shots Morris allegedly fired in the incident late Thursday afternoon in the 2100 block of 75th Street. The victim's wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

Authorities say that the men got into an argument that became physical, that Morris pulled out a pistol and shot the victim and then fled. Prosecutors did not say what sparked the dispute or whether the men knew each other.

Morris' next court date was set for Jan. 4.

A witness who works at a Subway restaurant inside the Wal-Mart said Friday that an altercation involving a group of five to nine people preceded the shooting.

The witness said he saw one person pull out a pistol. Then the group moved outside of his view. He heard loud sounds and knew they were gunshots.

The suspect fled before police arrived. Police cleared and searched the store. No other victims were located, officials said. Several other stores in the mall were put on lockdown, according to shoppers.
