In brief: Pirates of the Caribbean wins People's Choice award

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was the surprise winner of the favourite film category at this year's People's Choice awards. The awards, which are voted for by the American public, saw the swashbuckling adventure edge out the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. However, that film did take the favourite drama category. Bruce Almighty won the favourite comedy award, with Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson given gongs for favourite film actress and actor. It was the ninth People's Choice award for Roberts.

Kevin Costner is returning to the wild west. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the actor, who was laden with Oscars for his directorial debut, Dances With Wolves, is set to direct and star in a western called Horizon. Obviously a fan of the genre, he has also starred in Open Range, Wyatt Earp and Silverado.

Johnny Vegas, the English comedian, is set to star as a pub team darts player who attempts to win the world championship. According to today's Daily Mirror, the comedian will appear with Lee Evans in the film, which is described as "a cross between King Pin and The Full Monty."

Josh Hartnett and Rachel Weisz are lined up to star in Mozart and the Whale, a love story based on a young couple suffering from Asperger's syndrome. According to Variety, the film, which is being independently financed, will start shooting on March 1.
