Six members of family arrested over murder of mother, 20

Eight people, six from the same family, will appear in crown court charged in connection with the murder of a mother-of-two found beaten to death. Seven people have been charged with the murder of Rachel Hudson, 20, and one with perverting the course of justice. Ms Hudson's body was discovered in the grounds of Newstead Abbey Park on 18 March. Ms Hudson's in-laws Ronald and Trudy Hudson and their sons Ronald and Shane were remanded in custody after appearing at Nottingham magistrates' court yesterday. Another son, Craig (Ms Hudson's husband) and his sister Vicki Hudson-Makings were remanded in custody on Friday. It is alleged that the six, with Shane's girlfriend Elizabeth Hogg, killed Rachel in the family home.

Muslims given civic reminder

A guide reminding British Muslims of their civic duty to report terrorists was launched yesterday. The Muslim Council of Britain is distributing 500,000 copies. The move is aimed at reassuring Muslims who feel 'unsettled and fearful' of anti-terror tactics while reminding them of their responsibilities and rights as British citizens. Know Your Rights & Responsibilities Pocket Guide was launched at the new London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel. It also contains information about what to do if Muslims are arrested, detained at ports or have their houses searched by the police.

Steve Bruce in theft tussle

Birmingham City football manager Steve Bruce was attacked after disturbing two men who tried to steal his daughter's car. He suffered cuts and bruises in the assault outside his Warwickshire home in the early hours of yesterday morning. The two men ran off after the assault. Weapons are not thought to have been involved. The club insisted that Bruce, 43, would still take charge of his team's away fixture this afternoon at Bolton Wanderers. They said the incident was not thought to be football-related.

Man shot dead in Bradford

A 22-year-old man died shortly after being shot in his car in front of a group of people in the Leeds Road area of Bradford. Despite the attempts of paramedics to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses .

Gatwick strike fails to impress

A strike by hundreds of baggage handlers and maintenance workers at Gatwick Airport failed to disrupt flights yesterday. The workers mounted picket lines outside the airport as they launched a 24-hour walkout in protest at workloads and the suspension of a union official. Their employer said there had been no impact on passengers.

Tomlinson's challenge

Jane Tomlinson, terminal cancer sufferer, today takes part in the three quarter Ironman challenge in Nice which involves a 4km swim, 120km bike ride and a 30km run. The distance is three times as long as the Olympic triathlon.

Bounty sale

Two watercolours by Captain William Bligh, who was abandoned by his crew in the Bounty mutiny, fetched £20,000 at Christie's in London.

Julie silenced

Dame Julie Andrews appeared on the Parkinson show last night and said that she has no hope of her singing voice returning.

Swans saved

A rescue operation is under way to save a flock of swans after two tonnes of oil leaked into a dock, covering their feathers with oil. So far 28 swans have been saved.
