Troops have prevented specialists from rescuing some of New Orleans' most historic documents, from original land grants to slave sale records. Refrigerated trucks hired by the New Orleans Notorial Archives were turned away by uniformed troops as they tried to enter the city, said Stephen Bruno, custodian of the archives.

Website bid to find parents
Photos of children separated from their parents by Katrina have been posted on a website to reunite families (www.missingkids.com/). One entry reads: "His name may be Neiamaya or Jeremiah. His date of birth is unknown; however, he is believed to be about two years old."

Hollywood stars join relief effort
Hollywood celebrities have pitched in to help the Katrina relief effort. John Travolta delivered food and tetanus shots to shelters in Louisiana on his private jet, Paul Simon donated two mobile medical units, and Macy Gray and Oprah Winfrey handed out food and spoke to evacuees at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas.

Train station becomes jail
A temporary jail at New Orleans train and bus terminal housed 124 inmates yesterday. "The first guy we housed drove up in a stolen car and wanted to buy a bus ticket," said Colonel Terry Norris of the Louisiana Department of Corrections.
