In a first, BCCI to hold workshop for state unit treasurers

MUMBAI: For the first time in its history, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) -the richest sports body in the world-will organize a workshop for all its 35 state association treasurers on September 25 in Goa, essentially with a focus on learning accounting practices and fund distribution. On the same date in Goa, the Board is also holding its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

In a communication (TOI had a copy) on September 14 to all the treasurers of the state associations, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has written: "I'm writing to request your attendance at an upcoming workshop, where we aim to address several crucial agenda items. The details of the workshop are as follows: "Date: September 25th, 2023, Location: Goa.

"Agenda: 1. Accounting practices: Discussion on accounting practices by the BCCI and the SCAs (State cricket associations) to reflect transparent sourcing and utilization of funds. 2. Fund Distribution: To discuss process of funds distribution among the BCCI and the SCAs to reduce cost of compliance and to avoid double taxation. 3) Credit for TDS and Interest: To discuss the process of grant of full credit of TDS to SCAs on issues settled by the BCCI under Vivad se Viswas scheme, 2020. 4) GST on ticket sales: We will delve into the matter of Goods & Service Tax (GST) applicability on the sale of tickets."

Shah has concluded his letter by stating: "This workshop is scheduled after the conclusion of the BCCI AGM in Goa. Your presence and active participation are highly valued as we collaborate to find solutions to these significant financial and regulatory matters. I look forward to your attendance at the workshop."

All the state associations receive crores of rupees in grant and subsidy for developing infrastructure from the BCCI, so financial management becomes an imperative part of administration of the game in India, at every level.
