Imran Khan and his wife Reham have announced they have filed for divorce 10 months after getting married.
Khan had a successful career as a cricketer before moving into politics, and is now the head of Pakistan’s opposition Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. His wife is a journalist.
Both confirmed the news on Twitter, with a spokesman for PTI confirming the news on Facebook.
“This is a painful time for me & Reham & our families. I would request everyone to respect our privacy,” he said, adding that rumours of financial settlements were "absolutely false and shameful"
His wife said: “We have decided to part ways and file for divorce”.
A statement on Khan’s official Facebook page requested the media “refrain from any speculation” due to the “extremely painful matter”.
Khan was previously married to British journalist Jemima Khan (nee Goldsmith), who has kept her married name following the divorce. They were together for nine years.
