Health and nutrition are key areas for improving the lives of Unilever’s 800,000 smallholder farmers and their families. That’s why we’ve joined forces with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) to create a Nutrition Intervention Programme which aims to reach 2.5 million people in rural communities.
The programme will improve the diets of farmers and their families in Unilever’s supply chain with a specific focus on female farmers, pregnant women and young children. It will also contribute to improved health through hand washing, based on our successful Lifebuoy model.
The initial programme launches in India and aims to improve the nutrition and health of more than 20,000 farming families, that work to source vegetables and spices for brands like Knorr and Maille. That means around 100,000 people in our food business supply chain will benefit from better information on healthy diets, increased access to vegetables and livestock, and growing nutrient-rich trees and plants in between planting cycles.
Investing in nutrition is key to development efforts related to food, poverty, health, gender and employment. For every $1 (65p) spent on nutrition at least $16 (£10.42) will be returned in economic benefits, according to the 2014 Global Nutrition Report.
