Sydney Thunder's WBBL title defence is back on track after they secured a second-straight victory following a diabolical start to the tournament.

The Thunder proved too strong for the Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday, winning their encounter in Launceston by 37 runs.

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana (50) and teenage star Phoebe Litchfield (31) powered the Thunder to 6-146 batting first.

The Hurricanes' chase began in disastrous fashion, with skipper Rachel Priest bowled by rising English star Issy Wong for a duck from the second ball of the innings.

Indian spinner Deepti Sharma had the Hurricanes' batters in all sorts of trouble, finishing with match-best figures of 3-13.

The Thunder were winless after their first five matches, but managed to get off the mark on Saturday by beating the Melbourne Stars by 19 runs.

The Thunder-Hurricanes clash was the first of four matches on Sunday, with the Stars to face Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers up against Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers to battle Sydney Sixers.
