Improving signage to historic sites a “priority” for Dumbarton

A councillor who vowed to help boost our Robert the Bruce campaign has said making efforts to improve historical signs in West Dunbartonshire should be a “priority”.

Bailie Denis Agnew says ensuring people in the town are aware of the history surrounding them is an “important issue which should be acknowledged.”

This comes as the independent councillor prepared to chair the cultural committee as the Lennox Herald went to press yesterday (Monday).

Dumbarton MSP calls on culture secretary to support Lennox Herald Bruce campaign

Bailie Agnew, who is also the convener and spokesperson of communications, museums and cultural development, said while a discussion regarding the campaign was not on the agenda, he hoped to highlight our efforts in campaigning for better signage directing people to historical monuments such as St Serf’s Church in Levengrove Park.

The ruin is a 13th century church which contains the internal organs of King Robert the Bruce. Alongside Dunfermline Abbey and Melrose Abbey, it is one of the key sites in the story of the King of Scots’ death.

He told the Lennox Herald: “We have a relic in Dumbarton and we should be doing something about it.

“I will be tasking officers to try and bring this important piece of our history to more prominence. It is an important issue and we have to acknowledge it.

“We have these links and while there is nothing on the agenda in relation to the campaign, I will be talking about signage in West Dunbartonshire and I will use the campiagn efforts as an example.”

Bailie Agnew previously praised our Let The Bruce Rule The Rock campaign to highlight the significance of Robert the Bruce in West Dunbartonshire, saying that anything to encourage people to embrace the area’s culture and history should be welcomed.

He said:“I am very supportive of the Lennox Herald campaign and I will make endeavours to bring about discussion on anything that connects with our joint aims. The element of tourism is very important and this is a big incentive.”
