Improvements planned for memorial of legendary Nottingham bare-knuckle fighter

Improvements are planned for a memorial over the grave of the legendary Nottingham bare-knuckle fighter Bendigo.

A new inscription is set for the memorial of William 'Bendigo' Thompson, a 19th century fighter and boxer.

The memorial, at St Mary's Rest Garden, in Bath Street, St Ann's, was installed with a lion holding an inscribed scroll in one paw.

However, several letters have become missing because of weathering to the stone behind.

The original wording was: "In memory of William Thompson 'Bendigo' of Nottingham who died Aug 23rd, 1880, aged 69 years."

And a slate tablet bearing the same words is planned to be placed over the original inscription.

The work is expected be carried out by specialist memorial stonemasons at AW Lymn Memorials.

From the peak of his career in 1825, until he retired in 1850, Bendigo was undefeated in 23 fights and became the champion of All England.

Planning documents, submitted to Nottingham City Council for the improvements, state: "This work will respectfully enhance the Bendigo Memorial and improve the visitor experience to this site of historical interest."

The applicant was listed as Mr Alan Dawson.
