Impressive and unique collection of St Johnstone strips raises a smile among fans

A St Johnstone fan’s impressive collection of strips brought memories flooding back for fellow supporters this week.

Gary Birrell (53), from Methven, unveiled a unique drone image on social media of tops dating back to the year 1982.

From the famous teal and magenta number to the Eskişehirspor-inspired red and black away top, Gary’s collection runs up to present day.

“The first one was 1982, an Umbro pin-stripe,” said Gary, who was a ballboy at Muirton Park.  “The collection stretches from there to present day.

“I would always buy one top at full-price when it first came out and then usually, at the end of the season, either the home or away top would be half-price.

“My pal has a drone and, because I have so many, I’ve never had the chance to photograph them.

“I thought with the good weather I could get them all out beside the house in a wee field.  I didn’t think I had as many tops, to be honest.

“You get comments about certain tops. Whatever team you support, looking at pictures of strips brings back memories.”

Gary is eagerly awaiting next season’s top being released as he looks to add to his collection further.

“There are still more to be had,” he told the PA.  “I’m just waiting on the new top coming out now.

“It can be expensive, but not as expensive as buying some of the tops of Premier League clubs down in England.

“I've got a wee lad who is three.  I’ll keep it going and then hand them down to him.”
