'Impossible' for Celtic to be seen as champions if league isn't finished says ex-Rangers striker

Steven Thompson is adamant that Celtic cannot be crowned champions until the current campaign is finished on the park.

Neil Lennon 's side led the Scottish Premiership by 13 points when football in the country was brought to a halt due to the coronavirus crisis.

While Rangers hold a game in hand over their rivals, Thompson reckons Celtic would have gone on to scoop a ninth league crown in a row.

But the former Rangers and St Mirren striker believes that does not mean the trophy should be handed out if fixtures cannot be fulfilled due to the virus.

Thompson told the BBC’s Scottish football podcast : “Anyone that says Celtic weren’t going to win the league is lying. They were going to win the league. A lot of my friends are Rangers fans and they had given up the ghost. Celtic were going to win the league.

“But now, if Celtic are given the league Rangers fans won’t accept that, across the board. Universally it won’t be accepted.

“How can you be given a title if you haven’t actually won the title? It’s impossible to award the title to Celtic in those circumstances.

“I knew they were going to win the league but I don’t think you can give a team the title without having played out the season.”
