'Important work still to be done': Carney after Trump halts 50% tariffs

Following the announcement of United States-Canada trade deal by US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the two partners have made 'substantial progress', although "there is important work still to be done."

"Over the last number of weeks, Canada has engaged in intensive discussions with the United States to address outstanding trade issues and deliver greater certainty and real benefits for Canadian businesses, workers, farmers, and families. Substantial progress has been made, although there is important work still to be done," Canada PM's office said in a statement.

As this work is ongoing, the US has agreed to postpone the implementation of its 50% tariff on a range of Canadian goods under Section 338 of the US Tariff Act of 1930 until end of day, August 21, it added.

Carney further stated that Canada remains focused on building a stronger, more independent, and more competitive economy at home.

Trump announced the trade deal with Canada on Wednesday as before passing the 12.01 am Wednesday deadline.

"I have paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada, that were scheduled to kick in tomorrow morning for a three day period, based on the fact that Canada and the U.S.A., subject to the finalization of documents, have a deal," he said in a post on Truth Social.

"The great Keystone XL Pipeline, long ago killed by Sleepy Joe Biden, may be awoken from the grave," the US president added.
