Imperial envoys sent to Kashima Jingu shrine festival in eastern Japan

MITO -- The Emperor's messengers joined an annual festival at Kashima Jingu shrine in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Tuesday.

Although the festival is held every Sept. 1, envoys from the Imperial Household Agency participate only every six years, during the rat and horse years, according to the Chinese astrological calendar. This year corresponds to the Year of the Rat.

The messengers carried a Chinese-style chest holding sacred treasures from the Emperor to offer it to the main shrine and sent words commemorating the festival.
