GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. _ U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., is under fire from party leaders and President Donald Trump after saying the president should be impeached, based on the findings of the Mueller report.
Supporters outnumbered detractors when Amash hosted a town hall meeting at a Grand Rapids high school Tuesday night.
Here is some of what he said:
On impeaching the president
"To me, the conduct was obviously impeachable, so the question is, do you then move forward with impeachment proceedings ... I am concerned that we've gotten to the point that impeachment may never be used under any circumstance and I think that is a greater risk than a risk that it will be used too often."
On the Mueller report
"Volume 1, it has more Russians in it than there are characters in Game of Thrones."
"Robert Mueller very clearly identifies and analyzes ... several instances of obstruction of justice and shows all the elements."
"My colleagues ... a lot of them think I'm right about the Mueller report, but they just won't say it."
On being a member of Congress
"I represent the entire district. It doesn't matter to me whether a person voted for me, or didn't vote for me."
"This is what it means to be like, a bigger person. You have to do the right thing, regardless."
"It's a false pretense to assume that because a member of Congress passed a particular piece of legislation ... that that member of Congress has accomplished a lot. If you suck up to leadership and do their bidding, they will give you bills."
On liberty
"Liberty can not survive in a system where people hate each other and there is no virtue ... You have to have love."
On the economy
"The economy is doing very well. The president deserves some credit for this, of course."
On trade
"I don't believe in tariffs. They're a tax on the American people."
On getting re-elected
"I'm not worried about it. And in any case, you should always do what's right. That's what people do, time and again, they compromise themselves. And then, what are you even there for?"
