Impact of EFL coronavirus cash boost on Nottingham Forest assessed as skipper addresses suspension

Financial forecast

Nottingham Forest’s share of a £50m relief package from the English Football League would be used up in less than a fortnight, according to one football financial expert.

The league’s governing body announced on Wednesday their plans for a cash boost to clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two as they look to cope with the coronavirus outbreak.

Games have been suspended until the end of April at the earliest, resulting in a lack of matchday revenue throughout the football ladder.

The £50m will be split into immediate payments for the rest of the 2019/20 season, and also an interest-free loan facility.

Skipper speaks

Nottingham Forest midfielder Ben Watson says the suspension of the football season caused by coronavirus is "difficult" for the players.

And he admits he does not envy the game's bosses having to make big decisions about how to finish the campaign.

English football will be suspended until at least April 30 because of the continued spread of coronavirus, with the Reds currently in the play-offs places in the Championship with nine matches left to play.

The Football Association has agreed the current season can be "extended indefinitely".

Ex-Red sacked

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Pajtim Kasami is among nine players sacked by FC Sion after the Swiss league was halted indefinitely by the coronavirus pandemic.

Dismissals also include former Arsenal players Alex Song and Johan Djourou.

The players are said to have refused to sign an agreement for a wage cut during the indefinite suspension of the Swiss top flight.

Transfer claim

Former attacker Darren Huckerby impressed in a short space of time during his loan at Nottingham Forest - and he says he came close to staying longer.

The 43-year-old netted five goals in 11 appearances for the Reds when on loan from Manchester City in the second half of the 2002/03 campaign.

As well as memorably helping Forest thump arch-rivals Derby County 3-0, Huckerby played his part as the team reached the play-offs that year.
