Immunity ruled out for tycoon suspected over reporter’s killing

Malta's prime minister Joseph Muscat today announced that the main suspect in the car bomb killing of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia will not be granted immunity in return for revealing what he knows about the case.

Tycoon Yorgen Fenech was arrested a week ago as he tried to leave the island on his yacht.

Now his lawyers say he is prepared to give information about people close to Mr Muscat, including former chief of staff Keith Schembri, allegedly named by Mr Fenech as the mastermind behind the 2017 killing, tourism minister Konrad Mizzi, who has resigned, and suspended economy minister Chris Cardona.

The decision to reject immunity for Mr Fenech came after an all-night cabinet meeting. Mr Schembri was arrested on Tuesday but has been freed and is said to be no longer “a person of interest” to police.
