Immersive London theatre show offers audience members a five-course meal on a plane

Plane food is bad, right? A new play set onboard an Airbus A380 is set to change your mind about that.

Theatre group, curious directive, will recreate a plane in Shoreditch Town Hall for their show, Gastronomic – and serve passengers a five course tasting menu.

Just 44 audience members will be able to see the show at one time, and will become part of the play, the narrative of which explores migration, British culinary identity and the power of food. They will be served by three world-class chefs, revealing how the dishes are created in real time through augmented reality.

Director Jack Lowe devised the show together with professional chefs. It originally ran at Norwich Theatre Royal last year, but has since been developed with the National Theatre’s Immersive Storytelling Studio.

For the London run, the company will pair up with charity the Shoreditch Trust. Chefs from their Blue Marble Training project, which trains young people towards careers in the food industry, will join the show’s professional chefs in serving the audience.

Gastronomic will run at Shoreditch Town Hall from September 23-October 12, shoreditchtownhall.com
