Imelda Staunton in new snaps as the Queen for upcoming series of The Crown

New images have shown the brilliant transformation of Imelda Staunton into Queen Elizabeth II as filming continues on the Netflix smash hit The Crown.

Imelda, 65, took over the role from previous Queen actress Olivia Colman, who depicted Her Majesty in seasons three and four.

Claire Foy originally had the part, playing the character during her younger years during the first and second seasons.

Imelda was snapped opening a dairy as the monarch as filming continues in West London.

The scene, being filmed for the fifth series of the hugely popular Netflix show, is understood to be set in 1991.

It shows Imelda's "Queen" dressed perfectly as the monarch in a patterned green blouse with bright white gloves.

She finished the look with a smart green hat together with a large black trim while being handed scissors for the unveiling of Warton Dairies.

Her hair was immaculately styled while she donned large circular glasses.

The Crown season 5 will be released on the streaming platform in 2022.

BAFTA winning actress Imelda is set to portray Her Majesty in the final two seasons of The Crown and she previously admitted she was "frightened" to take on the role.

She said she has an "extra challenge" of playing a recent version of the Queen as it will be fresh in the audience's mind.

Last month she spoke from an office on the set of The Crown season five, which showcased pictures of her predecessors framed in the background.

She said "Hello, I’m Imelda Staunton, and I’m currently on the set of The Crown, where we have just begun filming season five.

"I’m delighted to be here, inheriting the role of Queen Elizabeth from two outstanding actresses. Most recently, the wonderful Olivia Colman, and who could forget the actress who originated the part, Claire Foy.

"I will do my utmost to maintain the very high standard that they set."

She announced the show's air date as she continued: "On behalf of the cast and crew, we look forward to bringing you the next season of The Crown, in November, 2022."

Previously, Imelda has starred in roles on hit productions such as Harry Potter, Nanny McPhee and Downton Abbey.
