Imelda May slams Cobblestone development and says heart of the city is being 'ripped out'

Imelda May has slammed the planned Cobblestone pub development and expressed her fears that Dublin was losing its soul.

The Liberties singer believes that the balance between progress and preservation needs to be restored and worries about the number of hotels being built in the capital.

She told Newstalk that Dublin's culture and heritage is not being protected.

Imelda said: "Like everybody else walking around Dublin wondering what's happening as you're watching hotel after hotel being built.

"It's really worrying that the culture is being forgotten about nor not being guarded as much as it should be.

"It's so many really important parts of our culture and our country. The people aren't fighting for a pub - they're fighting for a hub of Irish music...

"People learn down there, they sit and pass the knowledge down to each other.

"It's not the loss of a pub, it's the loss of a whole community."

The "Johnny Got a Boom Boom" singer said that fans abroad are now even noticing how rapidly Dublin is changing.

She said: "You can tell how the people are feeling and if the people are taking to the streets and protesting, then they need to be listened to.

"The heart of the city is being ripped out and people can feel it happening. When there's progress, there also needs to be balance and the balance has been lost.

"The small businesses are the heart of the city.

"The people are the heart of the city."
