Imelda May left heartbroken after sudden death of her dog Alfie

Imelda May has said her "heart is broken" after her beloved dog Alfie sadly died.

The musician said her "best friend" passed away after 13 years as she shared a picture of them cuddling on social media.

Imelda tweeted: "My heart is broken. My darling Alfie is gone. How I long to hold him as I did for 13 glorious years. My boy, my best friend, my joy, my companion, my love. Rest in Peace. I will love you forever Alfie."

The songstress received plenty of support from her fans with one saying there's "no pain like it".

Another fan wrote: "Am so sorry to read this- they really are the most special, loving partners in our lives."

The singer had been in much better form earlier in the day wishing Bono a happy 60th and looking forward to celebrations before her companion passed away.

She said on Twitter: "Happy Sexy 60th my dearest Bono. Have the best day! We will celebrate as soon as we can. Get those margaritas ready."
