Detectives investigating the death of an imam in Rochdale have rearrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Jalal Uddin was found with a fatal head injury in a children’s play area after being attacked on the way home from a mosque on 18 February. The 64-year-old was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

A 21-year-old man and a boy, aged 17, were arrested on 22 February and later bailed until 20 April.

But Greater Manchester police said on Saturday that officers had since found new evidence and had rearrested the man on suspicion of murder.

DCI Terry Crompton said: “This investigation remains a high priority for us and, as such, significant work is being carried out to ensure we bring those responsible to justice.

“As a result of this excellent work by our officers and detectives, as well as help from the community, new evidence has come to light which has allowed us to once again arrest this 21-year-old man on suspicion of Jalal’s murder.”

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the South Street area of Rochdale at around 9pm on 18 February to contact them on 0161 856 4711 or to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
