Imagining Ederson's Man City transfer policy after he solved Pep Guardiola's striker conundrum

In the build-up to Manchester City's 2-1 Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain, Pep Guardiola heaped praise on one of the club's unsung heroes.

As City's director of football and the man in charge of player transfers, Txiki Begiristain prefers to stay out of the headlines; if he finds himself the topic of conversation, then something has gone wrong.

That was the case this summer with the Harry Kane saga, but more often than not, Begiristain has got things right.

But if he ever needed a hand with City's transfer dealings, could maverick goalkeeper Ederson offer some assistance? In a recent interview with Brazilian network TNT Sports , Ederson was asked which of his compatriots he'd like to see City sign.

"I’d bring the pigeon [Everton forward Richarlison]," he said. "For the chats. He’s a goof, a clown. There are many words I can put on him."

While the Toffees striker would fill a gap in City's squad, it seems fairly unlikely that Begiristain will follow up on Ederson's advice, however fun it would be to see the keeper find himself a comedic sidekick.

This got us thinking here at City Is Ours - which of Ederson's other international teammates might he want City to sign?

Vinicius Junior

The tricky 21-year-old winger joined Real Madrid back in 2018, but it's only been in the opening months of this season that he has shown what he is truly capable of.

Operating largely on the left of a front three, Vini has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 14 La Liga outings this term, already a better return than he managed in 35 matches last season.

The way he has blossomed has seen him make eight appearances for Brazil in 2021, having made only one in 2019 and none in 2020.

Fabinho

Well, this one is a bit controversial.

Club captain Fernandinho - City's own Brazilian holding midfielder - is 36 years old now, and could very well leave the club when his current contract expires at the end of the season.

Fabinho of Liverpool challenges De Bruyne (2021 Liverpool FC)

The performances of Rodri this season have shown that City already have his long-term successor in the building - but a bit of cover wouldn't hurt, right?

Liverpool's Fabinho is a different kind of holding player than Rodri, but his defensive capabilities coupled with good technical ability would make him a good cover option for Guardiola. We have a feeling Liverpool fans won't agree.

Neymar

Neymar represents everything that City players do not. For PSG he's an individualist, an attacker who switches off as soon as the ball enters his own half and who couldn't care less about the unglamorous side of the game.

Yet for Brazil, he has proven that he can be a completely different player. At the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games, both played on home soil, he showed immense character and stamina in single-handedly dragging his country to the latter stages.

At PSG that side of his game, which he often showed at Barcelona too, has disappeared. But if any coach can rediscover that side to him, it's Guardiola.
