'Imagine if it had fallen on someone' - Residents react as tree collapses over A52

Residents expressed their shock after a huge branch from an oak tree came crashing down into a busy road.

The A52 Derby Road was closed from 10am on Sunday, September 20 after the large branch came away from the tree and blocked the entire carriageway in both directions.

Nottinghamshire Police issued a road closure notice and Highways England officials attended alongside Nottingham City Council to clear the way.

The A52 is closed from Priory Island up towards the Queen's Medical Centre and will remain so "for some time".

Henry Johnson, who lives in Wollaton and was walking by, said: "It is quite a big thing, can you imagine if it had fallen on someone?

"I understand one fell some time ago. It's a bit of a shock, it's quite a busy road.

"With the heavy winds you expect it."

Another resident, Beatrice Rodriguez, added: "I was surprised when i did not see any cars down here.

"It is shocking. It was probably broken before because it was windy yesterday and the day before.

"It's good no one was around."

The Met Office had not given any weather warnings for wind, with today's forecast showing gusts of up to 20mph only.

A dangerous tree in the same area was cut down in February last year.

At the time, the city council said it had been monitoring it for some time and the emergency felling took place before high winds in the days following.

Speaking from the scene, Richard Shipston, a tree officer for the city council, said it was too early to reveal why the branch had come away from the tree.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "At this moment we would not know [why it fell].

"We would have to do some sort of investigation.

"It is a branch off the oak tree that has come down. What we are doing to do is take it down to the tear so there is no chance of it happening anywhere else.

"We are going to do some routine work here while the road is closed also."

The road reopened at about 1.15pm.
