Images show what Finzels Reach homes planned for old fire service HQ in city centre could look like

Plans to turn derelict fire service headquarters into 297 homes have been recommended for approval.

The proposals, which represent the next phase of the Finzels Reach project, would see £140 million spent on the site beside Temple Meads.

As well as houses, a fifth of which would be affordable, developer Cubex seeks to build an office building for 1,100 workers.

The first phase of the Finzels Reach project involved hundreds of apartments being built next to Castle Park.

The revised plans for the second stage will go before Bristol City Council's planning committee on September 25.

Cubex executive director Gavin Bridge said: "We are very keen to continue the regeneration at Finzels Reach by replacing poor quality, concrete structures with high quality homes, offices and public spaces."

Mr Bridge said the firm aimed to create "balanced communities" and wanted to ensure any buildings would meet the needs of the city into the future.

He added: "Bristol has very limited space in central areas to provide the new homes and healthy workspace the city clearly needs.

"Whilst we acknowledge we must avoid the mistakes of the past and that some residents are naturally cautious about proposed change in the area, we believe we have to build more densely if we're to meet the demand for housing in the city and attract and retain the very best businesses."

"We've also put considerable effort into the design of the whole development so that it fits in well with its surroundings and is of a scale that compares well to other schemes in the area that have already achieved planning consent.

"There are too many stalled sites in Bristol, but our focus is always on delivery and we want to get started as soon as possible so we can continue the renaissance of this long-neglected part of the city centre."

A total of £2.4 million will be allocated to create an "attractive environment" and a "strong community", according to Cubex.

The developer says a total of 2,500 people will live or work at Finzels Reach by the end of the year.

The plans for phase two would increase that total to 3,300 people, with an investment value of £400 million in total.
