Images show Warmley School wreckage after arsonists start blaze

Firefighters have shared new images of the wreckage caused after a huge blaze ripped through a Warmley school.

A total of 12 fire crews attended the building on Tower Road in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, May 4).

Avon Fire and Rescue Service has today confirmed that investigators believe the blaze was started deliberately.

Photographs from the scene show charred remains of old window frames and doors, and holes in the building's roof.

Crews have returned to the school this afternoon to keep an eye on 'hotspots'.

Bedminster Fire station tweeted: "GreenWatch went back to The Grange School in Warmley this morning to ensure the fire is out.

"Using our turntable ladder we searched for hotspots and assessed the structure for safety."

Residents of Warmley say they were alerted to a fire by smoke billowing at the closed-down Grange School sports building on Tower Road North, at around 1am this morning.

A statement from Avon Fire and Rescue reads: "Crews from Kingswood, Hicks Gate, Temple, Bedminster, Patchway, Avonmouth, Southmead, Nailsea, Weston, Bath, and Thornbury were mobilised at 12am to reports of a fire at a school on Tower Road, Warmley.

"On arrival, firefighters found a large fire across parts of the building spanning across four teaching blocks ranging from one to three floors high.

"At its height, firefighters used six breathing apparatus for safety, and four 45mm jets to extinguish the fire. The turntable ladder was also used to help firefighters tackle the fire from height.

"Crews also used specialist equipment such as the High Volume Pump to ensure an adequate water supply was delivered to the scene.

"Police crews were also in attendance.

"Four appliances remain on scene including one turntable ladder, with crews continuing to dampen down."

An employee of neighbouring school Digitech Studio School has told BristolLive that it will remain closed today.

Posting on a local Facebook group, one resident said they were "lots of blue lights" while another commented: "Smell of smoke woke me up around 1.15am and spent last hour watching the neighbourhood like a hawk."
