Images show new landscape as one Churchill flyover is completely demolished

More of Liverpool's historic skyline is visible from one part of the city after one of the Churchill flyovers was removed entirely today.

Roads around the flyovers reopened this morning as the final stages of the demolition of the Northern flyover was completed.

It means only the Southern flyover is left to come down and marks the halfway point in the overall demolition process.

And new images give the clearest vision yet of what the area around the flyovers will look like once the flyovers are completely removed.

It's hoped demolition will finish in December, with the second half of the demolition set to cause less disruption than the first because the Southern flyover is further away from the city's public roads .

Council cabinet member for highways Sharon Connor said last week that the demolition of the Northern flyover meant "the finishing line on removing the Churchill Way Flyovers is now in sight".

Councillor Connor said: “I’m sure everyone who travels into Liverpool city centre will welcome the progress that has been made and the fact the remaining spans will not require any more road closures will be a nice bonus for businesses in the run up to Christmas.

“I must applaud the engineers for their flexible approach to this hugely complex challenge. The need to swap techniques only came to light in the past few weeks. It has required a huge rethink in terms of logistics but they’ve done it efficiently and without interruption to the overall timetable.

“This reverting to the munching method has also given us the opportunity to immediately recycle the concrete for the new coach park - which is a fantastic win-win as it will also save the city council money in the long run.”

Road closures in place over the weekend to help with demolition of the flyovers were lifted this morning.
