Images show former church destroyed after fire broke out

A church is completely gutted following a fire in Merseyside last night.

Crews from six fire engines tackled the blaze throughout the evening of Sunday, October 18.

Images from the scene, show that the roof of the building has collapsed and there is extensive fire damage to the inside and outside of the premises.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue service were called to the fire at St. Mark's Church, Brook Hey Drive, Kirkby, at around 5.31pm.

When fire fighters arrived at the scene they found the first floor and roof space of the two storey youth centre and church well alight.

The fire took over large area of the property, with a fire fighter estimating the affected area to be around 20 metres by 40 metres.

The fire was fully extinguished at 9.39pm and crews left the scene at 9.50pm.

Local residents were urged to stay inside and close windows and doors while the fire service tackled the blaze.

Merseyside Police also cordoned off a section of Brook Hey Drive to traffic.

The church had previously suffered extensive damage in a fire back in 2018, while a blaze at another property on the site broke out as recently as May.

It is not yet known what caused the fire or if it is being treated as suspicious.
