Images show extent of HGV fire that closed A1 for hours

Images have been released showing the extent of a fire that caused part of the A1 to close for hours. On Wednesday, May 17, the stretch of the A1 northbound between Gamston, Retford and Worksop was closed for several hours after a heavy goods vehicle containing grain caught fire.

The road was closed shortly before 9am and did not open until around 3.10pm later that day. The scene was attended by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, with firefighters leaving the scene at approximately 1pm, leaving the recovery in the hands of Nottinghamshire Police and National Highways Agency.

The road was closed for around six hours in total following the incident and no injuries were reported. Crews from Tuxford and Retford fire stations, as well as the water bowser from Worksop attended the scene to put out the fire.

A tweet posted by the fire service stated: "This morning we attended a HGV fire on the A1 Northbound. The vehicle was containing grain.

"Tuxford, Retford and the Water Bowser from Worksop attended to extinguish the fire. We’ve now left the scene in the hands of the police."
