Images show eight types of rash that could be symptom of coronavirus

Rashes are believed to be a symptom of coronavirus, according to experts.

Researchers at King’s College London say they have seen an increase in the number of people reporting skin conditions after testing positive for the virus, reports the Mirror.

Around nine per cent of infections reported to the Covid Symptom Tracker app, which has been endorsed by NHS Scotland, added in rashes on the body, fingers or on toes as additional conditions.

It is also believed to be twice as common in kids, with the symptoms appearing prior, during and after other virus symptoms.

Sometimes they can be weeks apart.

Working alongside the British Association of Dermatologists, scientists from KCL put together a gallery of 400 images after receiving thousands of examples of rashes.

Urticarial (British Association of Dermatologists)

The eight categories are a hive-type rash (urticaria), characterised by itchy raised bumps over any part of the body.

Papular & Vesicular (British Association of Dermatologists)

Second is a 'prickly heat' or chickenpox-type rash (papular and vesicular), usually on the elbows and knees, as well as backs of hands and feet.

COVID fingers and toes (British Association of Dermatologists)

Thirdly, are 'Covid fingers and toes' (chilblains), consisting of reddish or purplish bumps on the fingers or toes which can be very sore.

Pityriasis Rosea (British Association of Dermatologists)

Next is Pityriasis rosea, an acute eruption which can be seasonal and possibly viral in origin with more people reporting having it during the pandemic.

Neck & Exposed Chest Eczema (British Association of Dermatologists)

Fifth is neck and chest eczema which is often pink and itchy, while sixth sees the lips become sore inside or out, as well as possibly dry and scaly.

Purpuric (British Association of Dermatologists)

The penultimate rash is Purpuric, characterised by deep red or purplish spots, which cause bruise-like patches.

Viral Exanthem (British Association of Dermatologists)

And lastly is Exanthem - a symmetrical rash of reddish blotches or bumps, usually accompanied by a viral illness.

The same team of experts were previously successful in persuading health officials in adding loss of taste and smell to the symptom list.

Consultant dermatologist Veronique Bataille, led the coronavirus skin study.

She told The Sun: "Our research shows that rashes can be more predictive of Covid-19 than fever and cough, particularly in children.

"We found that one in six children gets a rash without any other classical symptoms.

"For most, Covid-19 rashes last for a few weeks and eventually disappear. In some cases, prescribed medication may be needed if the rash is very itchy."

Meanwhile, KCL epidemiologist Professor Tim Spector said through the app's millions of users, he and his team were able to "confirm the link between skin rashes with other Covid-19 symptoms”.

He said adding skin rashes to the list "will reduce infections and save lives".
