Image shows what a socially-distanced Freshers' Week event due to Covid-19 looks like

An image posted online by a Nottingham students' union has given an insight into how socially distanced Freshers' events have been running in the city.

Nottingham Trent Students' Union posted a picture on its social media of inside its students' union building on Shakespeare Street during an event on Friday, September 25.

The 'Shangri-La' event saw students made to sit down in groups of no more than six on what would have been a dance floor for the university newcomers in previous years.

The tables have been set up spaced apart from one another so students can stay within their households or bubbles and avoid mixing with others during Freshers' Week while tightened restrictions are still in place.

A spokesperson for Nottingham Trent Students' Union (NTSU) said: "NTSU are operating events that ensure maximum student safety providing students with a safe and secure space to enjoy themselves with all relevant measures in place for this.

"All events are thoroughly risk assessed with measures put into place to maximise safety including floor signs, hand sanitising stations and test and trace measures being used.

"The safety and security of our members is our top priority, and we will continue to follow government guidelines to give students safe space to enjoy themselves."

The event saw NTSU's building transformed into a "mythical paradise", complete with live DJ sets.

As events this year are seeing a limited number of students allowed in the NTSU buiding at one time, follow-up nights of the same theme have been organised for Monday September 28, Friday, October 2, and Saturday, October 3.
