Image shows aftermath of car crash down steep drop in West Yorkshire

There was a lucky escape for a driver and passenger who crashed through a fence and down a steep drop next to a West Yorkshire road yesterday.

The blue Citroen smashed through a wooden fence by the side of Dalton Bank Road in Huddersfield and plummeted into the trees below.

One person was able to free themselves from the car and clamber to safety while the emergency services were called to rescue their trapped companion.

West Yorkshire Police closed the road shortly after 12.45pm while three fire crews, from Huddersfield, Mirfield and Cleckheaton,. worked to free the person.

Incredibly, both people from the car were left with only minor injuries. One person was taken by ambulance to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to be checked over.

The Citroen was the only vehicle involved in the accident and it was recovered from the steep banking that leads to the River Colne soon after.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "The fire service were in attendance to make the vehicle safe and remove the other person from the vehicle.

"The road was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident and reopened around 2.30pm."

The fire service sent three appliances from Huddersfield, Mirfield and Cleckheaton.
